Whelk
Whelks are marine snails with sturdy, spiral shells. They are scavengers, feeding on dead marine organisms and other detritus. Whelks are often found in sandy or muddy areas, making the Thames Estuary a suitable habitat. They are less visible than bivalves but may occasionally be spotted in the intertidal zone near Southend Pier.
