Sea Sponge
Sea sponges are simple, porous organisms that attach themselves to submerged surfaces like pier structures. They filter-feed by drawing water through their pores and extracting nutrients. While they are not as conspicuous as other marine creatures, sea sponges are vital to the ecosystem, helping to filter water and provide habitat for smaller invertebrates. Around Southend Pier, they are occasionally found attached to rocks or pilings.
