Razor Clam
Razor clams are elongated bivalves that live buried in sandy or muddy substrates. They are named for their razor-like shells and are known for their ability to burrow quickly when disturbed. Razor clams are filter feeders, drawing in water through their siphons to extract nutrients. Around Southend Pier, their presence is most noticeable by the small, keyhole-shaped holes they leave in the sand at low tide.
