Mussel
Mussels are common shellfish that attach themselves to rocks, pier pilings, and other hard surfaces using strong, thread-like byssal threads. They are filter feeders, helping to keep the water clean by removing particles and plankton. Mussels are a key food source for various birds and marine creatures. Around Southend Pier, mussel beds can often be seen during low tide, clinging to structures in the intertidal zone.
