Lugworm
Lugworms are a common sight on mudflats near Southend Pier. They live in U-shaped burrows, feeding on organic matter in the sediment. Their presence is often marked by small coiled casts of sand left on the surface. Lugworms play a key role in the estuary ecosystem, aerating the sediment and providing food for birds like oystercatchers.
