Common Tern

The common tern, often called the "sea swallow," is a graceful summer visitor to Southend Pier. With its slender body, pointed wings, and long forked tail, it is easy to spot gliding over the water. Common terns dive dramatically to catch fish such as sand eels or sprats.
They are migratory birds, traveling thousands of miles to spend winters in Africa before returning to breed in the UK. Around the pier, they are most active in warmer months and are a joy to watch as they hunt near the surface. While not as numerous as gulls, their elegant behavior and striking appearance make them a highlight for keen birdwatchers.
