Cockle

Cockle

Cockles are small, rounded bivalve mollusks commonly found in the mudflats and sandy areas of the Thames Estuary. Their ridged shells are easily recognizable, and they play a vital role in the ecosystem by filtering water and providing food for birds like oystercatchers.

Cockles are also commercially important and are harvested for human consumption. Around Southend Pier, you can spot their empty shells scattered along the shoreline or observe live cockles during low tide.
