Chinese Mitten Crab
The Chinese mitten crab is an invasive species in the Thames Estuary, recognizable by its furry, mitten-like claws. Originally from East Asia, these crabs have spread rapidly, competing with native species and damaging riverbanks with their burrowing.
Mitten crabs can tolerate a range of salinities, making the estuary an ideal habitat. They are sometimes caught accidentally by anglers fishing near Southend Pier. While their presence is concerning, they are an intriguing species to observe due to their unusual appearance.
